Data protection: Partial success against Facebook

Austrian data protection activist fights against Facebook's alleged data protection violation.

Austrian data protection activist Max Schrems reached a partial success in his dispute with Facebook.

He sued the Californian tech giant for violation of Austrian, Irish and European data protection regulations. The European Court of Justice now decided that Austrian jurisdiction is responsible for this matter. Although Schrems cannot sue the social network on behalf of 25,000 other consumers as intended, he sees the decision as a first step in the right direction. Facebook argued in vain that the activist would not qualify as a consumer, since he would use the network solely professionally.
